Rough Riding in Roatan

I think it would be safe to say we got a pretty good image of life in Roatan, Honduras yesterday. We took part in an MSC excursion that took us far and wide across this long and narrow island off the mainland. For the most part, the roads were pretty good, but for a large portion of the ride, it was rough and rumbling on an almost completed dirt road.

The following video shows portions of the ride through the streets of Coxen Hole as we ultimately wound up, watching Garifuna dancers in Punta Gorda, eventually getting to Big French Key.

We chose this excursion based on the description of it being “easy“. For the most part it was. Except for the part of leaving the ship and getting to the staging area or hundreds of us piled on several different buses. Not to mention the fact that there was a long pier leading from the ship to the staging area. If I’d have known it was going to be that extensive, I would’ve opted to take my scooter. But I failed to do so, and by the time we pushed and shoved our way through crowds getting to the buses, I was already pretty much exhausted for the day.

But it was beautiful.

During the hour or so ride from the cruise port to our destination, I couldn’t help but notice the stark beauty of the island compared to what a lot of seemed to be abject poverty on the part of the people who live here. Keep in mind this is actually a Third World country.

Meanwhile, on Big French Key, I’m starting to get a little bit hungry and I’m considering how much white meat there is on a parrot.

Shortly, we will arrive in Cozumel, Mexico. I may take part in another excursion if I can get my scooter on board the vehicle, but if not, I should just roll around the area and see if I can find a Lucha Libre mask.

If I find one, you will see pictures tomorrow.
